Sandra Perković won the gold medal in the discus throw for the sixth time in a row at the European Championships in Munich, which will be difficult and probably impossible for anyone to repeat.
Before the Bavarian capital, the best Croatian athletes also won gold in 2010 in Barcelona, 2012 in Helsinki, 2014 in Zurich, 2016 in Amsterdam and 2018 in Berlin. No one else in the history of European athletics has more than four titles in one same event.
In Munich, our discus thrower had a great opponent in the Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo, Kristin Pudenz. In the second series, the German threw the discus 65.05 meters, to which Perković responded with 65.77. Sandra then gets into trouble with two incorrect shots, and Pudenz throws 66.93 in the third series and holds the lead until the fifth series.
Then Sandra takes the lead again with 67.95, which seemed unattainable for Pudenz whose personal best was 67.10. However, in the fifth series, her discus flew, flew, and landed to a personal record, but that 67.87 was still eight centimeters shorter than the shot thrown by Perković.
Since nothing changed in the sixth series, Perković took the gold and Pudenz the silver. Another German, Claudine Vita, came in third with 65.20, while our Marija Tolj took a very good sixth place with 63.37.
