Olympic champion Roje Stona leads a strong discus throw lineup in Zagreb

“I will try to break the meet record. Last week, I threw 67.85, so I’ll give my best to throw over 68 meters, maybe even more,” announced Stona about his participation in the 74th Boris Hanžeković Memorial.

Among the many strong events at the 74th Boris Hanžeković Memorial, some can even be considered super strong. One of these is definitely the men’s discus throw, as almost all of the world’s best discus throwers are coming to Zagreb again this year.

Leading them is the sensational 2024 Olympic champion, Roje Stona, who set the Olympic record with a throw of 70.00 meters. Stona, whose coach is the greatest shot-putter of all time, Ryan Crouser, has been preparing in Zagreb since Sunday and is promising long throws this Sunday at the SP Mladost stadium.

“I will give it my all because this is my last competition of the season. The same group of athletes from Paris last week will be here, and I hope for a good competition. There will be long throws. I do not know what the weather conditions will be like on Sunday, but I hope they will be great, as will the throwing circle. We will certainly have a fun competition. I will try to break the meeting record (68.87). Last week, I threw 67.85, so I will give my best to throw over 68 meters, maybe even more,” Stona announced.

Even further than Stona this year has thrown former world champion Kristjan Čeh (70.48), who has an impressive 71.86 meters personal bes.. Last year, Čeh won in Zagreb with a throw of 68.48 meters.

Additionally, the start list includes two more throwers who have thrown over 69 meters this year. 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, Matthew Denny, has a best result of 69.35 meters, and Reggie Jaegers III has thrown 69.16 meters this year.

Along with these athletes, Croatian best discus thrower, Martin Marković, will also compete in the competition where the discus could fly over 70 meters.
